Placing Girls and Women at the Center of Development - Women Deliver Gears up for UNGA & CGI
Girls and Women are at the heart of development, and if we want to see progress, their health, rights, and wellbeing need to be at the center of discussions. That is the key message from Women Deliver as we move into the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which both kick into high gear this coming week. This year’s UNGA is especially relevant for us as 193 world leaders commit to the Sustainable Development Goals – 17 Global Goals that aim to accelerate progress and transform development policy, program, and financing through 2030. If the SDGs are going to truly transform our world, it is critical that the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women are at the heart of implementation strategies. Girls and Women are drivers of development and powerful agents of change. Women Deliver will be involved in a number of activities and events over the next two weeks, making sure that this message is at the center of the conversation around the SDGs, during UNGA, CGI and beyond. To help elevate the message we have created an infographic which we encourages everybody to use.
It will be a busy week in New York, and Women Deliver will:
- Host a number of events to ramp up girls and women’s importance when it comes to sustainable development
- CEO, Katja Iversen and President, Jill Sheffield along with six current Women Deliver Young Leaders and three alumni will be attending and speaking at numerous events throughout the week.
Some examples:
Thursday 23 September, Women Deliver, in partnership with FHI 360 and Johnson & Johnson will host ‘The Next Generation of Development: Integrated Investments for Youth.’ The event will highlight the potential benefits of integrated development approaches for young people. UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Founder and Executive Director of the African Institute for Development Policy Eliya Zulu, U.S. State Department Special Coordinator for the Post-2015 Development Agenda Tony Pipa, and a grassroots youth leader are just a few speakers who will be featured at the event, that will be opened by Katja Iversen.
On Sunday 27 September, Women Deliver alongside Johnson & Johnson will host ‘How will Today's Young Leaders Achieve the Global Goals? Round-robin networking sessions with inspiring Youth Voices.’ The event will include dynamic presentations by young leaders in the reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) field. This platform will give voice to today’s young leaders to advocate for their priorities in health and international development, and to demonstrate the work they are already doing to forward progress in issues that affect them.
Finally, on Tuesday 29 September, The Danish Mission to the United Nations and Women Deliver, in association with UN Women, will host ‘Women Deliver—and not Only Babies,’ a high level and cross cutting discussion on the implementation of the SDGs to they mean the most for girls and women. Speakers will include: H.R.H Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngucka, Hon Nana Oye Lithur, Catherine Nyambura and H.E. Mr. Kristian Jensen. The conversation will begin next week in New York, but will continue on – all the way through to the Women Deliver Global Conference in May 2016. Starting on Saturday, 26 September Clinton Global Initiative will hold their Annual Meeting. Women Deliver is a health and gender advisor for CGI and there will be a large focus on girls and women this year. Our Young Leader, Catherine Nyambura, from Kenya will be speaking on a panel on Monday 28 September called “Talking About Sex: Breaking Down the Stigma Around Sexual and Reproductive Health”.

Throughout the month of September, our World Contraception Day Ambassadors have been sharing their countries’ SRHR stories in a variety of different ways. To follow along with the ambassadors and learn more about their amazing projects be sure to follow#WCDStories and #WCD2015.
It’s clear to see that UNGA will be a busy, but brilliant week. Women Deliver will work to amplify what is needed to ensure that everyone realizes that girls and women are the heart of sustainable development. Because as we know: When you invest in girls and women – everybody wins.
Throughout the week be sure to follow #GlobalGoalsLive and sign up for Daily Deliveries for live coverage of key conversations and presentations related to maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health at UNGA.
